How to unfavorite a song in Apple Music on Mac

October 18, 2026

Favoriting is one click. Undoing it is the same click, but a few cases look like the favorite refuses to go away. Here is how it works

The normal way

Point at the song and click the favorite button again: it switches between favorite and not favorite. Apple's guide describes it as a toggle and has no separate unfavorite steps. The song leaves the Favorite Songs playlist, which sits below Playlists in the sidebar

When it seems to stay

  • The star updates late. Music can take 5 to 11 seconds to redraw its own star after the flag changes, whoever changed it. Wait a moment before you click again, or you will favorite it again. See why the star in Music updates late
  • The song came from radio or the catalog. You favorited a song you never added to the library, so Music made a copy of it in Favorite Songs. That copy is the record you see. Removing the favorite has to happen on the copy (favorite or add to library)

Many at once

We did not find an official way to remove all favorites in one step. Apple's guide describes favoriting and unfavoriting one item at a time, and it does not mention multiple selection. If you need to clear many, a script can loop over the songs in Favorite Songs and set favorited to false for each. See the AppleScript article for how the flag works. Try it on a few songs first

From the menu bar

Likeit toggles the same flag from the menu bar. When the star is filled the song is a favorite, one click removes it, and for radio songs it clears the copy in Favorite Songs for you
